The new Data Center Optimization Initiative (DCOI) calls on data centers to reduce their overall footprint and reach a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.5 by September 2018. Data centers that fall short of this benchmark risk being shut down and asked to move to a third-party data center that has a PUE of at least 1.4. Adding frugality to the mix, the Federal Information & Technology Acquisition and Reform Act (FITARA) will require CIOs to show an ROI on all monies appropriated for the DCOI mandate.
DCOI OPTIMIZATION TARGETS
All federally owned data centers now fall under the new DCOI mandates. How data centers measure up will be determined by key optimization, cost savings, closure metrics and goals on a quarterly basis.
The Role of DCIM
DCOI calls for government data centers to install Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software. DCIM tools provide actionable intelligence to dramatically enhance efficiencies. Teamed with cloud services and inter-agency shared services, DCIM software ensures accurate and timely monitoring and control of both facilities infrastructure and power consumption. However, the next generation of DCIM software goes even further. It has the ability to automate for example, the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) program, which draws on a standardized approach to security assessment, authorization, and continuous monitoring of cloud products and services.
RAMP DCIM, THE BEST SOFTWARE FOR DCOI
Tuangru’s RAMP DCIM software monitors public cloud instances as well as on-premises devices, giving CIOs a much-needed overview of their cloud costs. Better still, the software automates FedRAMP, successfully facilitating the template-reporting requirement and ensuring faster installs. The new tools reduce integration costs and dramatically enhance configuration flexibility.
Tuangru’s RAMP DCIM also isolates workload costs to allow CIOs and facilities managers to make cost-effective cloud topology choices. Even what-if modeling is addressed to help pinpoint areas of cost reduction. An auto-discovery feature shrinks implementation time and cost by identifying workloads. The software gives managers a central repository for DCOI/FITRA reporting. Tuangru’s RAMP DCIM advanced reporting suite gives data center operators a leg up.
With more enterprises adopting a hybrid IT infrastructure (on-prem data centers and the public cloud), RAMP DCIM software tools provide actionable intelligence based on a holistic view. Operators can now make an informed decision on how to distribute workloads on-premises and in the cloud based on cost, performance, energy efficiency and resilience.
